Alpena County Sheriff Gives Safety Tips During National Stalking Awareness Month

January is National stalking awareness month. Stalking is a severe issue that many people have experienced. There are numerous safety precautions and measures you can take to help keep yourself safe.

“Stalking in the state of Michigan is defined as unwanted contact, repeated contact on an individual without their permission which would cause that individual to have some form of fear, whether they’re terrorized, frightened, threatened or harassed.” said Michael Lash, an Alpena County Deputy.

Stalking is not limited to just one form, there are various types of stalking. Some types could be aggravated situations or harassment on a wider scale.

“Some of the things that we express from law enforcement to victims of stalking is to call 911 immediately. Alert other people, family members and friends of what’s happening or the suspicious activity that is making you uncomfortable and document those incidents”, said Lash.

Having documented incidents of suspected stalking on file, can allow for quicker investigation and pro activity in developing a plan to keep the victim safe.

“I believe statistics shows that it’s typically an acquaintance, but there can be ex spouses, ex dating relationships can also lead to stalking, family friends can be stalkers, I don’t think it’s one demographic that you can identify, it kind of runs the game of relationships” said Lash.

If you feel like you’re being stalked, always trust your instincts and call the police immediately. The Alpena County Sheriff Department has a partnership with Hope Shores Alliance, a local agency that has a 24/7 helpline that you can call at 989-356-6265 for additional support.
