Alcona Tigers Receive Playoff Eligibility Ahead of 2023-24 Season

ALCONA, MI – The Alcona Tigers put together a 2022-23 season worthy of a playoff appearance. The program never had the chance to compete and spent the off-season hoping to become eligible for the upcoming season. The Tigers wish came true, and now the team gets a shot at a playoff spot for the 2023-24 high school football season.

Alcona finished with an impressive 7-2 record last year. The team went undefeated until week seven falling to Au Gres-Sims in a high-scoring matchup. Despite the long winning streak, the Tigers weren’t eligible for playoffs. The 2023-24 season is different for Alcona. They have finally received the eligibility they need for a chance at a playoff spot, and the team isn’t taking the opportunity for granted. Head Coach Jason Somers has been the playmaker during the off-season in regards to his team’s eligibility. “If we do things right,” he said. “The performance will be the byproduct of how they’re going to practice.”

The Tigers are continuing their preparation ahead of the 2023-24 football season. Any pressure surrounding a playoff berth doesn’t phase the team. An Alcona appearance is simply another task on the checklist of goals for the upcoming season. Junior quarterback Garrett Somers is focused on taking it one game at a time. “We’re going to strive to get better every week,” he said. “Then get to the playoffs and make a run.”

Alcona opens their 2023-24 season on the road. The Tigers head to Mio to face the Thunderbolts on August 25 at 7 p.m.
