Alcona Historical Society Hosting Garage Sale

The Alcona Historical Society is hosting a garage sale this weekend at the Harrisville Train Depot, an important step in their fundraising efforts to restore the depot and make it a central hub for Alcona.

Since putting the word out about the garage sale and asking for the public to bring their old items, the depot became filled with all sorts of different things available for sale this weekend.

The historical society is beginning the multi year process of turning the train depot into a central hub for all sorts of different social gatherings, and they are hoping the public turns out this weekend to help them raise the money in order to do so. They plan to use the money they raise to build a new fence and install a new security system.

“It’s been tremendous what this community has donated for the sale, so we’re hoping you come down to Harrisville’s citywide garage sale, stop and check out the inside of the depot, and leave us a donation towards the project,” said Co-chair of the Harrisville Depot Committee Becky Schroeder.

The Harrisville Depot Committee is taking on this project by their own merit, so they need all the help they can get, and they have received a lot so far.

“This is owned locally,” said Schroeder. “It’s up to us, and not just Harrisville, but all of northeast Michigan, the historical and architectural influence of this building, this is something that we really need to keep, and we want it to be open so that people can come see it. It’s a beautiful space.”

The garage sale takes place on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm, both days.
