Alcona County students team up with the ACCOA for Adopt a Grandparent program

LINCOLN, Mich. – The holidays are a time for celebrations, parties, and get–togethers, but sometimes the holiday season can also be a source for the blues, especially for our seniors. They may think about how quickly time has passed, or miss loved ones more during this season.

That’s why the Alcona County Commission on Aging, in partnership with Alcona County Schools made the effort to put a few smiles on area seniors faces this December with their first ever Adopt a Grand Parent program. Alcona students drew pictures, made cards and other crafts for Alcona area seniors.

Staff at the ACCOA said that the organization decided to do something for seniors because it’s such a different holiday season.

“We know 2020 has been such a hard year, for everybody,” said ACCOA Program Director Toni Scott. “I think the people that were impacted the most have been our elderly community and the seniors and so it was something that we were thinking how can we lift their spirits, just put a smile on their face.”

According to ACCOA staff, the seniors who have received cards and crafts have been very appreciative. The organization would like to thank the students at Alcona County Schools for participating.

Including 8th grade Alcona Middle School student Baylee Goddard who made multiple cards for the seniors.

“My favorite part about making the Christmas cards was knowing that I could make a seniors Christmas brighter, especially because I know they don’t get many visitors due to COVID-19,” said Goddard.

The Alcona County Commission on Aging said they are considering doing the Adopt a Grandparent program again for Valentines day.
