Alcona County Approves Location for Veterans Affairs Office

After years, Alcona County will soon have a better location for their Veterans Affairs office.

Last year, the Alcona County Veterans Affairs Office thought they had found a new location. However, the county board of commissioners at the time ruled it unfit for a new building.

The whole process has been tedious and at times and caused tension between the county commissioners and the Veterans Affairs Office. On Wednesday, a location in the Village of Lincoln was finally approved for a new headquarters. “This is one of the very few meetings where we’ve left with smiles on our faces,” said Mac McCormick, secretary for Alcona County Veterans Affairs. “Besides all the background work and checking and hurdles they’ve put in front of us, we’ve covered with research and development from our own end, and we’ve come here and we’ve been shot down so many times.”

The location in Lincoln is seen as the perfect place as it sits almost right in the middle of the county, allowing veterans to get the care they need and get other things done while in town. “Our veterans now can not just come into our office but they can do shopping, banking, and do a lot,” said Patrick Smylie, Alcona County Committee Chairman. “The post office is right there and it’s just going to be so much nicer for our veterans.”

Like the previous proposed location, the new property was gifted by the Lincoln Downtown Development Authority. “A big thank you to the Downtown Development Authority of Lincoln for donating the property and working with us hand and foot and it’s been a real treat,” McCormick said. “We couldn’t have got this done without them,” added Smylie. “It’s been great.”

The new location for the Alcona County Veteran Affairs office will be located at 220 Second street in Lincoln.
