Lake effect snow winds down; Some sunshine breaks through Friday

Winds out of the northwest have generated lake effect snow off of Lake Michigan. Some snow showers have reached parts of Presque Isle, Montmorency, Oscoda and Ogemaw counties. Places near or along M-33 have been dealing with reduced visibility and slick spots on the roads. Drier air and lighter winds will move in Friday, helping to end any leftover lake effect snow.

Highs Thursday reached 20 degrees in Alpena, 15 degrees in Houghton, Michigan and 25 in Chicago. Cool temperatures will remain in our area tonight and Friday with similar highs for Friday afternoon, mainly in the lower 20s. Once the wind direction changes and we lose the flow out of the north/northwest, temperatures will begin to get warmer, that will happen over the weekend.

A storm system currently affecting California will move east and affect parts of the Midwest this weekend. It still remains to be seen how close this will get to Northern Michigan. Parts of southern Michigan will get a round of snow Saturday night-Sunday with a few inches for places closer to the Ohio and Indiana borders. There’s a chance this system might produce some flurries around Northeast Michigan on Monday, but local snowfall amounts do not appear substantial.

Friday: Mix of sun and clouds during the afternoon, still feeling cool. Early-morning temperatures will begin in the teens. Afternoon highs will reach around 22 degrees. Evening temperatures will dip to the upper/middle teens.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with a cool morning. Predawn temperatures will drop to about 10 degrees. Temperatures will rise to near 20 degrees in the late-morning. Afternoon highs will get up to 25 degrees. Evening temperatures will be in the lower 20s.

Sunday: Cloudy and slightly warmer. Predawn lows will be near 19 degrees. Afternoon highs will climb to about 27 degrees. Evening temperatures will be in the lower 20s.
