DNR Issues Dry Weather Warning
With Michigan weather conditions dryer than usual, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) would like to remind everyone to be mindful of the likelihood of fires during this time.
Whether you’re hunting or cleaning up your yard, it is important to keep fire safety in mind. If you decide to burn debris in your yard, don’t forget to check the burn permit website or call the DNR’s toll-free number to check if burn permits are being issued in your area. Dry conditions paired with increased outdoor activity, has had DNR firefighters, along with local fire departments, responding to twelve fires across Michigan this week. Firefighters were able to save seven structures from being destroyed, with only one outbuilding lost.
DNR state fire supervisor Jim Fisher says these recent fires serve as a reminder to use extra caution when managing flames this week. “You know, if you’re out there camping in the woods this week with deer season going on there’s probably lots of people out there camping…when you leave your campsite, make sure your fire is dead out. Don’t leave it going when you leave. Whenever you’re burning any brush or leaves or any of that kind of stuff keep hand tools, rakes and shovels available and have water handy…just in case it does get away. Make sure you have a cleared space all around your area where you’re burning whether it’s a campfire or a debris pile.”
