Warm through this weekend; Weak cold front on Monday

High temperatures reached the mid-40s today for many locations, where sunshine was prevalent with a light breeze out of the southwest about 10 mph. Areas where cloud cover and foggy areas lingered saw cooler temperatures, such as Iosco county.

A mix of rain/snow/sleet moved through our area during the predawn hours early this morning, and his since moved to the east. High pressure currently centered over Nebraska is taking control of our weather through the weekend, providing plenty of sunshine.

Low temperatures tonight will drop to the mid-20s, then morning temperatures tomorrow will hover around 30 degrees. Partly cloudy skies are expected in the afternoon as highs reach around 40 degrees.

Looking ahead, winter starts next Friday, December 21 at 5:23 p.m. Normal high temperatures for the start of winter are at 30 degrees. Christmas is coming up a week from this Tuesday, and historically, Alpena has a 75% chance of seeing a white Christmas — meaning at least 1 inch of snow is on the ground Christmas day. New Year’s is 18 days away, and low temperatures are normally around 14 degrees, but last year’s New Years Eve was sub-zero.

Plenty of warmth will remain over Northern Michigan through the weekend. Partly cloudy skies are expected tomorrow and Sunday, and highs will generally reach the lower 40s. A weak cold front will produce colder temperatures on Monday and a chance of flurries (mostly in the morning) with highs in the lower 30s. A gradual warming trend will take place in the middle of next week, but also some more in the way of wintry mixed precipitation types will probably arrive around Thursday.
