IOSCO  COUNTY, Mich. — Emergency response and cleanup work closed a several–mile stretch of US-23 well into the afternoon.

The crash happened around 8:30 Friday morning on US-23, just south of Oscoda— where crews have been working on a sewer main.

The driver of a northbound semi–truck didn’t slow for the construction zone and struck a flagman. The semi then slammed into a Goyette company van, which in turn collided with a third car.

The crash caused a fire and closed traffic on the road until well into the afternoon.

Oscoda Police Chief Mark David explained the extent of the damage.

“The vehicle that burned up- we’re not sure of the exact model yet. But it appears to be a GMC Envoy, from what we can tell. And then there was a red full-sized Chevy van for Goyette that was hit. And then the semi- or what’s left of it, you’re seeing to my side.”

The flagman died in the collision, while one of the vehicle’s drivers died in the resulting fire.

The drivers of the semi–truck and Goyette van were taken to the hospital.
