Today is National Voter Registration Day
ALPENA, Mich. — Today is National Voter Registration Day. The holiday was first observed in 2012 as a non-partisan civic holiday celebrating democracy.
The League of Women Voters of Northeast Michigan used the opportunity6 to distribute voter guides and register Alpena Community College (ACC) students to vote. Devon Dean of Hillman was one of more than a dozen ACC students who registered today.
“When I was 18, I didn’t think it was that important,” said Dean. “You can see where we’re at now.”
Griffin Smith of the League of Women Voters said it’s important for people to know that women fought very hard to have the right to vote.
“Women have had the privilege to vote for only 100 years,” said Smith. “I believe it’s very important for all of us to engage in the process especially if we want a different result,” she said.
