Tips on avoiding heating fires this winter

ALPENA, Mich. – The Alpena City Fire Department, along with the National Fire Protection Association say home heating fires make up a majority of all house fires in the country.

The fire department says there were more than 54–thousand structure fires involving heating equipment. These fires have taken hundreds of lives and resulted in damages amounting to $1 billion between 2011 and 2015.

City Fire Chief Bill Forbush says following these safety tips will you help avoid heating fires this winter. “You should have your furnace serviced by a qualified service personnel. If you have a wood stove or a fire place you should also have your chimney cleaned whether you do it yourself or not — it needs to be cleaned or periodically checked through the winter season.”
