The Mich-E-Kewis Park Plan- What’s next?

ALPENA, Mich.– The Alpena City Council adopted the new Mich–E–Kewis Park Plan during their August 17 meeting.

The plan was developed after work was completed on Starlite Beach a few years ago. It was constructed with community input and seeks to update the park for the community’s new needs.

Rich Sullenger, Alpena’s City Engineer, told us some of the plan’s goals.

“The major elements are relocating the volleyball courts, putting in a Farmer’s Market pavilion with bathrooms in there, and development of a walkway around and through the park.”

The plan isn’t the final vision, however; it’s more of a guideline that will be updated with time. The next step is submitting the plan to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for grant funding. Construction will take place in phases over several years.
