Students at ACC work on new prototype

ALPENA, Mich. — Students at Alpena Community College are working on a prototype wheelchair tire cleaner inspired by an ACC instructor’s sister.

It’s easy to wipe off your shoes and leave them at the front door when there’s lots of snow but for those with mobility issues who rely on wheelchairs, cleaning their wheels is a challenge.

ACC Machine and Tool Instructor, Andrew Paad, was inspired by his sister who has cerebral palsy and faces her own mobility challenges. Paad, along with his family,  came up with a solution and presented the project to his students who developed prototypes which became patented versions.

Director of Alumni Relations, Mary Eagan, says she is very proud of the students involvement.

As far as their current phase, Paad said they are working on the last refinements followed by a final patent and after that it should be ready for sale.
