The Stanley C. Beck scholarship is sponsored by the Exchange Club of Alpena.
This year, in addition to possessing a strong sense of volunteering, leadership, and patriotism– students were required to write an essay on the theme “inspiring communities to become a better place”.
Of the three semi– finalists, Katherine Gallarno, won the club’s heart with her ideas and the scholarship.
“The community can’t become a better place if you think it’s going to happen in one moment,” said Katherine Gallarno, Alpena High School senior. “It has to be a group of people and their all working together you know and just like small things opening doors for other people and being kind to your neighbors- that’s what makes the community a better place, and like from these small actions bigger things can happen later on.”
She was awarded A $1,000 scholarship named after Stanley C. Beck–a former Exchange Club of Alpena member who started the program in the 1970s.
Katherine plans to put the scholarship towards her education at Michigan Tech this Fall.
