Oscoda residents come together for Furtaw Field

OSCODA, Mich.– Some Oscoda Township residents are raising awareness for a historic area.

“Friends of Furtaw Field” is only a few weeks old, but its members have a big message. They say Oscoda township should find a community use for Furtaw Field, rather than sell it. Rumors about the field’s fate have circled since a short-lived sale posting in February, according to the Oscoda Press.

Founder Justin Griffith said they have been walking their dogs in the area and visiting downtown to demonstrate the field’s potential.

Griffith told WBKB that he believes Furtaw’s community ties are too deep for private use.

“We feel it should be for the community. And we’d like a park idea. There were drawings made up in 2018 that had a fully-developed park with a lot of open space.”

Griffith referred to drafts including a pocket park, pavilion, and event space. He said he’s spoken with several township board members and hopes to find a solution together.

Furtaw Field has a long history in the community. It’s home to the township’s Paul Bunyan statue and hosted the Paul Bunyan Days festival before th coronavirus.
