It’s mask off for Alpena Public Schools.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services updated their guidance on masks for public spaces.

APS schools will no longer require students or staff to wear masks.

APS communications director Lee Fitzpatrick shared why you shouldn’t throw your mask away just yet.

“The exceptions would be that they’re still required for school buses, because school buses are regulated by federal law and that law has not been lifted”

The health department states that Michigan is currently in the recovery stage of the pandemic.

Fitzpatrick said APS schools will continue to stay abreast of MDHHS guidelines while remaining hopeful that tomorrow marks a new day for students.

“We’ll certainly be happy to see kids faces, especially the young kids we’ve had for sometime now and for many of them have never seen a face and so that kind of a heartwarming moment I think we’ll anticipate tomorrow morning. ”

Students at Alpena Community College are still required to wear masks  because the college is not governed by the state.
