Local family raising money for memorial project
ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena resident Steve Garfield says his mother Gloria always wanted a gazebo in the back yard, but the time never seemed right.
Sometimes it was because of their living arrangements, but more often, it was her health.
“When I was nine years old, my mom had a brain tumor removed. After that she had seizures, she got COPD, osteoporosis, and cancer.”
Garfield and his family want to honor Gloria’s memory by building the gazebo she never had.
Just before her death last month, they started a GoFundMe page to raise the $10,000 necessary for materials and labor.
They’ve raised about a thousand already and the local Home Depot’s offered to lend a hand where it can.
Today would have been Gloria’s 69th birthday.
