Heather Winfield trial begins

ALPENA, Mich. – A local teacher accused of sexually assaulting an Alpena student is finally heading to trial.

In 2016, APS special education teacher Heather Winfield was accused of having inappropriate contact with a student.

Police said there wasn’t enough evidence to charge her then.

It wasn’t until 2019 when the case reopened and Winfield was arrested and charged.

Police said Winfield sexually assaulted a male student over a two–year period.

Chief Judge Roy Hayes III from the 33rd Circuit Court of Charlevoix County will preside over the case.

Court documents show the trial could last for nine days.
