Heat Awareness Day – May 25, 2018

On the last Friday in May, all of the National Weather Service offices in Michigan host a state-wide Heat Awareness Day. It is certainly a fitting theme for today, since the temperature hit a record high of 90 degrees at Alpena airport, beating the old record of 87 degrees set in 1965. The National Weather Service would like everyone to know about these heat-related impacts, ranked from least severe to most severe.

But there are some ways you can beat the heat! When the temperatures get hot and sticky, make sure to stay out of the sun, inside with air conditioning, and to keep hydrated. Also make sure to check on the elderly and children, and remember that a parked car without the air conditioning running can heat up 20 degrees above the outdoor temperature within ten minutes.

Looking at this weekend, we can expect some scattered storms around Northeast Michigan on Saturday. If you’ve heading out boating or to the beaches, winds and waves won’t be an issue, but be mindful of the weather conditions on Saturday.

On Sunday, the rain chances will be lower, but there still may be a hit-or-miss shower around. On Memorial Day, temperatures will be in the 80s with partly cloudy skies.
