Governor Whitmer signs Executive Order clarifying face covering requirements for organized sports

LANSING, Mich. — Governor Whitmer has signed Executive Order 2020-180 clarifying the rules onĀ face coveringsĀ for organized sportsĀ duringĀ training, practice, and competition.Ā Ā

Ā ā€œTheĀ COVID-19Ā virusĀ isĀ easily spreadĀ through airborne particles andĀ canĀ affectĀ everyone differently.Ā By wearing aĀ face coveringĀ when properĀ distancing is not possible, athletes will be better protected from contracting the virus and spreading it toĀ family members,Ā frontline workers, andĀ vulnerable populations,ā€ saidĀ Governor Whitmer.Ā ā€œWe cannot afford to let our guard down.Ā AsĀ weĀ continue to fightĀ this virus, weĀ need to makeĀ smartĀ and informedĀ choices so we can beat COVID-19 together.ā€Ā Ā

Ā Executive Order 2020-180Ā specifies that a faceĀ covering must be worn at all times by athletes training for, practicing for, or competing in an organized sportĀ when the athlete cannot maintain 6 feet of social distance, except for occasional and fleeting moments. Athletes are notĀ required to wear a faceĀ covering if they are swimming.Ā Athletes competing in football, soccer, or volleyball, for example, are not able to maintain 6 feet of social distanceĀ as required andĀ therefore would need to wear a facial covering.Ā Ā

Ā ā€œWe are not out of the woodsĀ yet, and COVID-19 is still a persistent threat to our frontline workers, students, and families,ā€ said Chief Medical Executive and MDHHS Chief Deputy for HealthĀ Dr.Ā JoneighĀ Khaldun. ā€œIndividuals have a choice about whether or not to play organized sports.Ā Since contact sportsĀ pose a high risk of transmitting COVID-19, MDHHSĀ recommendsĀ that people should choose to avoid them. For thoseĀ whoĀ do chooseĀ to play organized sports, weĀ expectĀ youĀ toĀ followĀ these strict safety measuresĀ and wearĀ a face coveringĀ to reduceĀ yourĀ risk and protect the health ofĀ yourĀ teammates, coaches,Ā officials,Ā and loved ones.ā€Ā

Last week, the governorĀ signed Executive Order 2020-176 reopening Michiganā€™s gyms and poolsĀ in those regions where they remain closed and allowing for organized sports practices and competitions to resume in those regions where they remain restricted, subject to strict protections meant to limit spread of the virus. The governor also signed Executive Order 2020-175 outlining strict workplace safety measures gyms and pools must follow to protect people from the spread of COVID-19.Ā

Additionally, The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)Ā released guidance on organized sports recommending against contact sports at this time. It also cites the elevated risk associated with activities that involve ā€œshouting, singing, or breathing forcefully,ā€ and notes there have been 30 reported outbreaks associated with athletic clubs, teams, or athletic facilities. MDHHSā€™ guidance recommends mitigation measures organized sports teams may take to reduce the spread of COVID-19 during training, practices, and competitions. These recommendations include frequent hand washing, not letting players share towels, clothing, or other items they use to wipe their faces or hands, ensuring proper cleaning and disinfection of objects and equipment, prioritizing outdoor practice, and more.Ā
