Farm-fresh breakfast at Alcona Schools

LINCOLN, Mich.– People showed up in droves at Alcona Schools Saturday morning for good reason.

They wanted a taste of homemade flapjacks and syrup.

Saturday was the twelfth Annual Maple Syrup Celebration at the Sugar Shack.

Alcona agriscience students and members of the Future Farmers of America run this program every year to show off what they’ve learned.

The event included a free breakfast with fresh syrup, handmade by students.

Agriscience teacher Connor Hubbard said he’s proud to see his pupils at work.

“The best part of this event for me is seeing my students taking charge and leading activities today. And working through this and being out here volunteering. That’s the best part for me, [as well as] the opportunity to see some old friends from the community show up and to catch up with people.”

Students managed everything, from cooking the food, to giving the tours, to sanitizing the tables. Some even had the responsibility for operating the evaporator. Syrup sales at the event go towards future class trips and programs.
