DNR not charging for fuelwood permits

NORTHEAST MICHIGAN– Michigan residents can apply for fuelwood permits at no cost.

The DNR said the pandemic influenced the decision to eliminate fees. The department wants to make it easier for people experiencing hardship to get firewood for the heating season.

The permits allow holders to cut limbs from fallen and dead trees in approved state forests.

This is the second year in a row the DNR has made fuelwood permits free.

You can find applications and a map of approved forest locations here.

The DNR said to use the map first, then fill out your permit request based on that information.
