Costly Repairs Continue At Alpena’s Public Safety Facility

Some costly repairs are set to take place at Alpena’s Public Safety Facility.

The city has hired Meridian Contracting Services to replace the approximately 24-year old membrane roof. The roof is said to have started leaking almost immediately after construction was completed in 1993. Various patches over the years have helped the issue up to this point.

Last year it cost nearly $86,000 to repair the sloped areas of the roof. This year it will take another estimated $45,000 to repair the flat roof area.

“Well with this year’s repairs we’re going to be doing the flat areas,” said Mike Kieliszewski, Assistant Building Official. “There’s a mezzanine area over the garage area where the fire trucks are parked, so there’s flat areas there- there’s flat areas at the entrances and along the back of the building.”

These repairs are said to come with a 15 year guarantee. Building officials are hoping to start with the repairs next month, with a completion date by the end of June.
