Cool temperatures remain locally; Isaias heading up the East Coast as tropical storm

Today’s highs reached only 64 degrees in Alpena, 66 degrees in Houghton and 70 degrees in Duluth. A cold front brought showers yesterday and colder temperatures today.

Scattered showers have been moving through Northeast Michigan due to a low pressure system located near Detroit. Patchy showers will likely end by midday Tuesday.

Isaias has briefly restrengthened to a Category 1 Hurricane. After making landfall near Wilmington, N.C. it will likely become a tropical storm as winds drop below hurricane strength. This will bring flooding up the East Coast as Isaias continues to travel northward. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect from coastal South Carolina to Maine.

Around Northeast Michigan — Tuesday: A chance of spotty showers early, then late-day clearing. Predawn temperatures will be in the middle 50s. Temperatures will be only in the lower 60s by late-morning. Afternoon highs will reach 68 degrees, well below normal for early August. Early-evening temperatures will be in the lower/middle 60s.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy, a cool morning giving way to a milder afternoon. Early-morning lows will be very cool, close to 50 degrees. Late-morning temperatures will be in the lower/middle 60s. Afternoon highs will reach about 72 degrees. Early-evening temperatures will be in the upper 60s.

Thursday: Partly cloudy. Early-morning temperatures will be in the lower 50s. Late-morning temperatures will rise to the upper 60s. Afternoon highs will warm to about 80 degrees. Early-evening temperatures will be in the lower 70s.

A look at July in review — To nobody’s surprise, temperatures in July averaged notably warmer than the climatological “normal” values. The average of all the daily highs was 85 degrees, that’s about 5 degrees warmer than normal. All of the low temperatures throughout the month averaged to 60 degrees, also about 5 degrees warmer than normal. Remarkably, July had 9 days when the temperature reached above 90 degrees. Based on long-term normal values, July typically has 2 days when the temperature goes above 90 degrees. Total rainfall throughout July was 8.1 inches, close to 3 inches above normal. More than 3.5 inches of rainfall occurred on July 26.
