Business owners raffle for Special Olympics

OSSINEKE, Mich.– One notable Ossineke couple found a new way to raise money for one of their favorite causes.

Normally, Connie and Gary Stephan host an annual Polar Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics. However, COVID-19 restrictions nixed that event this year, so the Stephans are trying their hand at a fundraising raffle.

Alpena’s Walmart and Meijer each contributed a canoe, and Fitzpatrick’s Hardware donated an outdoor griddle.

But the real highlight is an outdoor BBQ kitchenette— hand-built by Gary and his son, Nick.

“It’s got a nice little food bar on it. And it’s all plumbed with water for the sink and the drain. And all you have to do is plug in your electric extension cord and it fires the refrigerator up too.”

Gary said the Special Olympics mean a lot to his family.

Nick, who was born with down syndrome, is a regular participant and enjoys practically every sport in the games.

“I like base[ball] and basketball… My favorite is soccer ball… I even run!”

Tickets for the raffle are $10 and the drawing takes place on June 30.
