ALPENA, Mich.– The Bay Athletics Club received a grant from the MEDC.
The club was one of many businesses in Alpena that received a survival grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
The grant helps businesses like restaurants and fitness centers recoup costs from revenue lost during December’s mask order.
Trina said she’s applied the $10 thousand dollar grant to rent and payroll expenses.
“We’re struggling. And I’ve been honest with our team and I’ve been honest with our members about that. When I see people in town and they say ‘hey, we’ll be back when we don’t have to wear a mask,’ I always say, generally with a smile, I hope we’re still there.”
Owner Trina Gray said that while the club offered online classes, nearly 400 members chose to cancel their memberships.
She added that she’s very grateful to Target Alpena, which handled grant disbursement, as well as to her customers who have stuck with the club.
