APS pushes back the fall semester

ALPENA, Mich. — The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education held their regular meeting this week and decided to push back the start of the fall semester.

Students will return to school this fall on Tuesday, September 8, attending both virtual and hybrid courses.

Grades K-5 will be face-to-face five days a week and grades 6-12 will have a hybrid schedule.

One group will attend classes on Mondays and Thursdays and the other on Tuesdays and Fridays leaving Wednesday as a virtual day for both groups.

According to Interim Superintendent, Susan Wooden, alternating days creates a routine for students to learn from home and from their instructor.

Wooden added that Chromebooks will be individually assigned for grades 6-12 for the entire school year and parents are encouraged to provide their children with their own school supplies.

Following is the list of upcoming parent orientation meetings:

  • On August 18 and 19, Alpena Public Schools will host via Facebook Live the Return to School Plan that will provide final details and help parents to make an informed decision for their child by August 24. Parents can join virtually on the following dates and times:
  • Elementary Parents – Tuesday, August 18 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
  • Secondary Parents – Wednesday, August 19 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
  • To streamline APS Online for elementary students, a Parent Orientation will be held at Alpena High School on August 26, 2020 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
