ALPENA, Mich. — It turns out people in Alpena County have quite a bit of junk in their basements.

The Alpena Resource Recovery Facility’s free electronics drop-off had an enormous turnout Saturday morning. People turned in obsolete or broken televisions, CD players, computer monitors, and more.

RRF manager Stan Mischley said he was most surprised by how many old computers people had.

“We’re getting in some really old computers today. And you can see it, like some really old monitors. [People] just have them stored in their house an wait until they can get rid of them here.”

And it wasn’t just the monitors and computer towers that were old. Several people dropped off TV sets with dials and antennae!

When collection wrapped up at 1 PM, volunteers had filled two 53–foot–long trailers. Drivers hauled the trailers to recycling centers in Grand Rapids.

Speaking of old devices, the Recovery Facility now accepts Freon–based air conditioners and refrigerators.

You can drop them off on the first and third Wednesday of every month for a $15 to $30 fee.
