Alpena Fire Department gives safety tips for fire season

ALPENA, Mich. — Fire safety is a year around responsibility, but around this time is when fires pose the highest danger.

One way to be safe is to make sure you have hard wire smoke alarms or lithium battery smoke alarms that last 10 years.

If you do not have a smoke alarm the Alpena Fire Department can install up to 3 free smoke alarms in your home.

Alpena Fire Department Captain Andy Marceau said, “have a plan to get out safe and always have to ways out of every room and lastly I want people to remember to close before you doze when you go to bed at night close those bedroom doors that’ll give you time to get out that second way if needed.”

Installing smoke alarms on every floor of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside of sleeping areas and testing the alarms once a month to make sure they are working can save lives.

Another fire safety tip is to talk to your family about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.

If a fire occurs get out quickly and call 9–1–1.
