Alpena County settles lawsuit with former undersheriff Terry King

ALPENA, Mich. — The 16-month-long lawsuit between Alpena County and Terry King is finally over.

The former undersheriff was forced to resign from his position in 2019 after accusations from the sheriff of investigation interference. Following his resignation, King sued the county, saying he was outed from his position for whistleblowing and uncovering wrongdoings of other officers.

The county agreed to pay $125,000 to King to settle the lawsuit. $25,000 of that will be paid by the county, while insurance will cover the remaining amount. While King can still run for office, he agreed not to seek employment from the county again. In the agreement, Sherrif Steve Kieliszewski is cleared of any wrongdoing, as is the county.

Sherriff Steve Kieliszewski says he is glad the whole situation is finally over, and he can now focus on constructing the new jail and other projects to benefit the community.
