ACC Student Leadership Commission Hosts First Community Fundraiser

Pets were celebrated across the country yesterday for National Pet Day. Today, student leaders put the emphasis on local cats and dogs with their first ever community fundraiser.

In the past, the Student Leadership Commission has held events and fundraisers exclusively for students, like providing snacks during finals week. But today’s fundraiser raised money for the Huron Humane Society, engaging community members as well as fulfilling a crucial tenant of the college’s personal mission.

“We are Alpena Community College. So it’s important for us to make sure that we’re reaching out to the community, and helping those who need it,” says Student Leadership Advisor Heather Pines.

Today’s donors had the option of putting their name in a raffle to win large prizes, or to choose a small prize from the instant drawing basket. Many of the large prizes were donations, including 30–50 dollar gift cards for local businesses like Meijer or the Courtyard Restaurant. Instant drawing prizes were also donations, like movie tickets from the local theatre and iTunes gift cards. Student Leadership member Jacqueline Walchak says it’s nice to get involved with the community for a change.

“It’s probably the most public one we’ve ever done with the community. Usually we’ll do things for student fundraisers, but this one’s nice just that it is so open and we have gathered so many things from our community.”

Today’s event saw donations from students and staff, as well as friendly members of the community who just wanted to help a great cause.
