5th grade students raising king salmon eggs at Besser Elementary

ALPENA, Mich.—Thanks to Michigan Department of Natural Resources, 5th graders at Besser Elementary are learning how important king salmon are to the Great Lakes.

Since early November as part of the salmon in the classroom program, students in Ms. Hartmeyer’s class have been raising 150 king salmon eggs.

Students saw for the first time the eggs hatch into their eyed–egg stage. Students not only learned about salmon life-cycle but also when salmon was introduced to the Great Lakes. In May, the class will release the fish into the Thunder Bay River on Rotary Island.
