Michigan drivers could soon have digital licenses

LANSING, Mich.—Soon your driver’s license or state identification card could be in the palm of your hand – but instead of a plastic card, now on your mobile device. Michigan users would be able to pull up their id virtually, on their phones.

An app using a special qr code would hold all their information, similar to a plastic ID. A QR code consists of black and white squares used for storing information that can be read either by the camera or on a smartphone.

The unique technological idea presented in bill 454 was proposed by Republican Sen. Pete Lucido, last month.

Now bill 454 would have to pass through Senate and get approved by the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, then the House to be signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to become law.
