Whittemore-Prescott Hires New Head Football Coach
Whittemore-Prescott hired Tommy Atkinson as the new head football coach. (July 5,2018)
The Whittemore-Prescott Cardinals hired a new head football coach on Friday, June 29, 2018. Tommy Atkinson is an Alpena High School alum from the class of 2009 and his father, Tom Atkinson, was inducted into the 2017 Alpena Sports Hall of Fame. The first-time head coach will bring a log of knowledge from the 8-years of success he had as Beal City High School, one of the schools his father coached.
While assisting the Beal City Aggies, Atkinson was involved in two state championship games for football and three in baseball. Just last month he helped lead the Beal City baseball team to a state championship title.
Whittemore-Prescott will return about 8 seniors to the roster. The North Star League Cardinals’ last state title was in 2000, but they have been close a couple times in recent years. Their last losing season was in 1992 when the Cardinals finished 4-5.
