Undersheriff advises driving for conditions

MIKADO, Mich. — In light of this past weekend’s deadly snowmobile crash in Mikado, we spoke to the Alcona Sheriff’s Office about ways you can stay safe on the trail.

Undersheriff Keith Myers said speed likely played the largest role in this weekend’s accident. He said it’s important not just to obey the speed limit, but also to slow down if you’re in bad conditions. He added that this year’s weather has made trails trickier as well.

“With the small amount of snow we’ve had this year, the trails get packed down very quickly. They become slippery. They become icy. There’s not as much fluffy snow for the snowmobile, so it gets more difficult to control.”

And while it wasn’t a factor in this weekend’s accident, Undersheriff Myers said you should never drink before driving a snowmobile.
