ALPENA, Mich.– United Way’s annual Turkey Trot goes online this year.

People normally assemble at the APlex for the annual 5K and fundraiser. However, this year’s pandemic forced United Way to change their plans.

People can now donate a registration fee to United Way on their website and run their own 5K, indoors or outdoors.

This year, the funds directly benefit United Way to support its upcoming holiday projects.

Executive Director Joe Gentry said the run normally acts as a big coming–home event.

“We get a lot of returning people; college students who were away and coming home for Thanksgiving, and other family members. So it’s kind of a unique event in that it’s the same kind of group of people that once a year show up to Alpena to be with family and want to go out and get some exercise before the Thanksgiving meal.”

People can run any time between this Monday and Thursday.

The first 100 people to complete the run receive a novelty trophy in the mail.
