Trojans survive in thriller, advance to district semifinals

ALPENA, Mich. — It’s safe to say Monday didn’t go as planned for the Alpena Wildcats girls basketball team. After winning two meetings in the regular season against Traverse City Central, the Wildcats were looking for their third win against them in the first round of districts. That didn’t turn out to be the case. With less than a second remaining in regulation, Alpena needed a bucket to advance. However, they came up short, losing 44-43.

Allie DeRocher paced the Wildcats in scoring with 11 points while Reese Wisniewski chipped in with nine points. Halli Warner led the charge for the Trojans with 18 points, including four three-pointers on the night.

With the victory, the Trojans will collide with their rivals (Traverse City West) on Wednesday in the district semifinals. Meanwhile, the Wildcats close out the 2021 season with a 5-11 record.
