Thunder Bay Theatre brings on new artistic director

ALPENA, Mich. — Thunder Bay Theatre’s former artistic director, Jeff Mindock, stepped down from his position back in November. As of today, the Theatre’s board of directors has assigned Lucas Moquin to the role.

Moquin is no stranger to the area. He’s been working at the Theatre every summer since 2015. The recent transplant is from the Flint area, and studied theatre performance at the University of Michigan – Flint. He’s been a full-time resident of Alpena since 2018, and has already mastered a number of smaller tasks. Now he’s ready to take on a bigger role.

“I’ve predominantly been and actor and also a choreographer. That was what I was originally hired as. I’ve also done administrative work. I’ve taught dance. I also went on the educational tours last year.”

And that’s just to name a few. Now that he’s taken on the position, he plans to refocus the Theatre’s priorities, recalibrate, and start preparing for this year’s productions.

We’re still going to be doing three musicals in the summer. We’re still going to be doing Shakespeare. We’re still going to partner as much as we can with Alpena High School theater troop. We’re still going to be doing the let’s talk discussion panels.”

Moquin says he’s aiming for the first major production of the year, Pippi Longstocking, to start in May.
