Text Message Scam
According to Besser Credit Union’s Kristi Witt, citizens have reported receiving a random text message from an 844 or 888 area code asking the text recipient to call the number.
Once the call is made the user is asked to provide their debit card number, the security code, and the expiration date.
According to Witt, Besser Credit Union would never ask for such information because they already have it on file.
Witt says that if you do receive the text message your best option is to simply ignore it.
“For the most part you can ignore it because we are aware of it. We’ve had quite a few calls; we’ve had employees who have gotten phone calls also – or text messages. So your best bet is to just ignore it. If you are overly concerned about it you can give us a call at the credit union and discuss it further.”
Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union members have also reported receiving the text.
