Team of the Week: Oscoda Owls Girls Varsity Volleyball

OSCODA, MI – As another week of high school sports wraps up, WBKB Sports visited the Oscoda Owls Girls Varsity Volleyball team to feature them as our Team of the Week.

Earning an impressive 10-3 record so far this season, the Owls want to keep striving for improvement. Despite a young roster, the Owls believe age is just a number when you have freshmen and a sophomore with such talent. Head Coach, Melissa Curley, believes her team’s aggressive mindset is what creates such success. “They’re all just so competitive,” she said. “They’re always pushing each other to be better.”

With such a young core, veteran players are looked to for guidance. Captain middle blocker, Mia Whipkey, knows how to motivate her teammates. “We need to really focus on the next play,” she said. “We know what we need to do.”

As the seniors enjoy their last moments playing for the Owls, Captain libero, Grace Bergquist, believes the young team will be just fine once she’s graduated. “I have a lot of confidence in them,” she said. “I have no doubt that they’ll do great next year.”

Oscoda has an exciting weekend ahead. The program is hosting their home tournament on September 24.
