ALPENA, MI – As the Alpena Boys Varsity Tennis season wraps up, the number four doubles pair of Nathan Pokorzynski and Landen Gagnon ended their year on a high note becoming regional champions at the MHSAA Regional. The WBKB Sports team decided to become a doubles pair of our own to face off against the Wildcats on Thursday.
Only partnering up ten games ago, Pokorzynski and Gagnon are undefeated in conference matches this season. “I think our skill sets just complement each other,” said Pokorzynski. “Communication is also one of the biggest parts,” Gagnon added.
Reflecting on their win of the Big North Conference, the pair’s mindset ahead of the regional may have been what led them to success. “We had a good shot of going in there and winning,” said Gagnon. “Confidence is the biggest part,” Pokorzynski said.
The doubles pair took that confidence into their match against the WBKB Sports team. “I always like to go in thinking,” Pokorzynski said. “We’re going to win.” Gagnon added.
The doubles pair of Drew Celli and Isabella Shelton managed to get a set against the Wildcats. Pokorzynski and Gagnon took the tie-break chalking it up to a tie. Alpena’s doubles team have some goals for next season on their minds. “Playing higher next year,” Gagnon said. “Closer to two doubles and doing it all over again.”
