Strong defenses force tie between Alpena and Petoskey

Petoskey goalie McKenzie Haas saves shot from Alpena's Kennedy Kaiser.

Alpena, Mich. — The Alpena Wildcats entered Thursday’s match against Petoskey fourth in the Big North Conference. The Wildcats just topped the Northmen on Monday 2-0 in Petoskey, and they looked to add more points to the standings on this cold, rainy day.

The Wildcats got out to an early lead. Junior forward Anna Young scored in the first four minutes of the game, and that was the score at halftime, 1-0. The defense on both sides of the ball was phenomenal. Credit Alpena goalie Eden Zann and Petoskey keeper McKenzie Haas on making some tough saves.

The Northmen got on the board in less than four minutes into the second half. Korenna Haas delivered a pass back to Lexi Engler who scored from deep. Zann might have slipped in the mud on that one, but that was enough to tie the game. Neither team could make something happen on offense after that, and the game ended tied at one.

Alpena is now (8-5-1) overall and (2-3-1) in the BNC. Up next, the Wildcats travel to Traverse City Central on Tuesday, May 7th for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Last time these two teams met, Central won 6-4.
