Romero commits to Olivet College

ALPENA, Mich. — When it comes to seniors that plan on taking their talents to the next level, they focus on that one sport they have fallen in love with or believe they have more potential in. However, one Alpena senior believes he has the potential to succeed in two sports. Starting this fall, Sam Romero will be taking his talents to Olivet College, where he’ll be playing football and will compete in Shot Put and Discus for their track and field team.

At first, he was planning on going to Grand Valley State University to major in Sports and Recreational Management. However, when you’re given a chance to play sports as well as pursuing a degree that’s in your interest, that’s something Romero couldn’t pass up on.

“When my spring season got canceled, I knew I didn’t want to stop grinding,” said Romero. “I talked to the Olivet recruiter and he said that he would get me on the football roster.  A few days later, the track and field coach texted me and asked if I wanted to be a member of their team. That’s when I knew I wanted to dual-sport at Olivet.”

The senior has received numerous awards in both sports. In track and field, he helped the Wildcats capture a regional and district Title in 2019. In Shot Put, his personal best was a throw of 44′ 9″, while his best throw in Discus was 116′ 4″. In his final year of high school football, Sam was named All-Second Team Big North Conference for his efforts as a lineman.
