Rogers City father and son face several charges for illegal hunting activites

ROGERS CITY, Mich. — A father and son from Rogers City are being charged with several counts of illegal hunting activities.  Val Vogelheim, 56, and Josh Vogelheim, 26, initially denied doing anything wrong when they turned themselves in to the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Department last month.

Val is now facing nine counts including the aiding and abetting; taking elk without a license, possession of illegally taken game, and possession of protected raptors. Josh is charged with two counts, taking turkey without a license and taking deer without a license.

Conservation officers received a tip from an anonymous source in September of 2019 which led to a long investigation.

A conservation officer, assisted by peers and officers executed a search warrant at a camp in southern Presque Isle County. They discovered several elk, white tailed deer, a snowy owl, a sharp-shinned hawk, a barred owl and other frozen game. DNA evidence showed all animals were from Michigan.

Evidence also pointed to suspected illegal activity at a second camp. Conservation Officer Sidney Collins said a lot of people have been directly involved with these camps.
