Remembering loved ones at Little Flanders Field

ALPENA, Mich. — Local residents came out to Little Flanders Field today and shared with us why Memorial Day means so much to them.

Alpena resident Carole Cadarette’s brother served in Vietnam.  She said he has a hard time talking about his experience but the two came out together to pay their respects.   Cadarette said her fondest memory of her brother was the day he returned from Vietnam.  She said seeing him in uniform made her a proud sister.

For families whose loved ones did not return, Sgt. Jerry Burton said he and many others stand on the shoulders of those who lost their lives in war.

Matt Seguin honored veterans in a unique way by placing pennies on each cross.  He said he researched suggestions online and for him this one was befitting.  He said his grandfather served in the military, as well as his grandfather’s brothers so for him, it was also a way of honoring them.
