A talented dog trainer is in Alpena this weekend putting on what they call Puppy Pals Super Circus.

Wesley Williams has been training dogs to perform for five years. Over that period of time he’s had the chance to work with some great talent. “I’ve loved animals all my life,” he said. “My mom says when i was young I would search Craigslist for a petting zoo trying to buy my own petting zoo. So I’ve always loved animals so I feel like it was just a matter of time before I had my own animals to work with.”

It’s never certain how long it will take to train one of these dogs. “Some dogs, they take a little bit longer, and then they’re really good after you take a long time with them and some of them just learn overnight like this guy,” Williams said.

A lot of the dogs Williams uses are rescues. “Usually we scour the country looking for dogs that are probably not right for the average family but are right for our show because they have too much energy or too much drive and that’s what we look for in our show,” he said. “We want dogs that are looking for a job.”

The relationships Williams has been able to build have left him with a large family. “The bonds that you create with the dogs are unmatched,” he said. “All these dogs are my pets. They’re my personal pets. They sleep with me at night, in my bed. Unfortunately, there’s not much room for me as there is for them and so you create these bonds and they’re really inseparable and it really helps in a performance.”

Williams has three shows this Saturday at Northern Lights Arena in Alpena beginning at 11 a.m, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
