Oscoda’s Ms. Mermaid of Michigan using competition to address areas PFAS crisis

 

OSCODA, Mich. – Oscoda’s own Ms. Mermaid of Michigan is heading off to compete for the national title of Ms. Mermaid USA.

Elyssa Steward left for Virginia early Friday for the competition.

Steward has lived in Oscoda for several years.

She’s using the areas PFAS problem as her platform. She said the issue needs national attention.

“I don’t want to see anyone swimming in that, ” said Steward. As a lifeguard one day I saw all this big deposit of foam.
We need to fix this problem before this PFAS contaminate dumps into the largest body of fresh water in the whole world.”

Community action group – Need Our Water – will joined Steward in Virginia to spread the word about the states PFAS crisis.

She say’s the competition is part interview – with the rest taking place in the water.

Ms. Mermaid contestants actually wear silicone mermaid tails! Steward said they cost thousands of dollars.
