ALPENA, Mich. — Alpena’s Operation Holiday wants your help bringing a merry Christmas to local families.

Every year the group helps hundreds of families by providing hot Thanksgiving meals and Christmas toys. But this year, it seems yuletide donations are running short.

Coordinator Tammy Kish said people have donated far fewer toys than they did by this time last year. Specifically, donations for toddlers are going strong, but the shelves for kids between 8 and 17 are nearly barren.

Kish said they’ll accept as much as the community can give.

“We need hats and gloves. We love to give out reading books. Family games, coloring books and crayons, school supplies, all of that works.”

You can drop off gifts or monetary donations at the operation holiday headquarters in Alpena plaza on US–23, next to the old Neiman’s Market.

They’re open seven days a week and accept donations until a few days before Christmas.

Kish says you can call her at (989) 464-5588 to learn more about specific needs.
