NOW Coalition wants action on PFAS

OSCODA, Mich. – An based Oscoda coalition is demanding action on the PFAS crisis.

The organization along with U.S. Senator Gary peters and State Representative Dan Kildee addressed the issue during a press conference Wednesday.

PFAS contamination in the Oscoda area has been ongoing for years with the old Wurtsmith Air Force base to blame.

Senator Peters said the air force needs to work in good faith to help fix the problem.

“We also have to stop PFAS from entering the environment initially, that’s why we put into the National Defense Authorization a phase out of PFAS chemicals being used by the military and air bases,” said Peters. “Also we’re working on legislation to protect the firefighters the men and women who are dealing with substance who are exposed to very high levels.”

Peters said it’s outrageous that the air force is not complying with the states PFAS cleanup standards.

The NOW Coalition said the proposed plan from the air force only includes a small portion of the contaminated PFAS areas impacting Clark’s Marsh and the Au Sable River.
