ALCONA COUNTY, Mich. — Northeast Michigan athletes may be interested in this summer’s new half–marathon in Alcona county.

Runner Joe Lavigne said he came up with the Bay to Beacon half marathon during the beginning of lockdown in 2020. Now, after months of planning, the 13-mile race is taking participants. The course runs from Negwegon Park to the Sturgeon Point lighthouse.

Lavigne said the marathon is less about competition and more about the sights.

“So, what I wanted to do was- I wanted to encourage people to be able to go out into nature for the simple sake of enjoying nature, right? And a great way to do that is to run along the coastline.”

The Bay to Beacon committee has worked with Inspiration Alcona, Great Lakes: Great Responsibility, and other groups to make this marathon possible.

The day of the race is August 28.
